Marcos Urges Filipinos to Defend Truth, Strengthen Unity on Independence Day

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to safeguard truth, use technology responsibly, and help rebuild trust in society as the nation marked the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence on Friday, June 12.

In his Independence Day message, Marcos said the country continues to face significant challenges despite having long achieved freedom from colonial rule. He stressed that the responsibility of protecting the nation’s hard-earned liberty now rests on every Filipino.

“While our forebears fought colonial oppression through revolution, reform, and intellectual resistance, we face challenges of a different kind today,” Marcos said.

“We must protect truth from distortion, harness technology wisely, and restore trust in a time increasingly marked by division and distrust,” he added.

The President said modern challenges differ from those confronted by the country’s heroes during the struggle for independence, but they are no less important in shaping the future of the nation.

According to Marcos, the choices Filipinos make in addressing misinformation, technological change, and social divisions will have lasting consequences for future generations.

“How we respond to these demands will shape the course of our nation and define what we pass on to future generations,” he said.

Marcos delivered the message as the country commemorated the declaration of Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule on June 12, 1898, a historic event led by General Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite.

The President reflected on the sacrifices made by generations of Filipinos who fought for the country’s freedom and helped build the Republic. He said their contributions should continue to inspire citizens to actively participate in nation-building and uphold democratic values.

Marcos emphasized that freedom should not be viewed solely as an achievement of the past but as a continuing obligation that requires vigilance and commitment from every generation.

He said Filipinos no longer face the same colonial oppression that their ancestors endured, but maintaining freedom and democratic institutions remains a shared responsibility.

The President described freedom as “not merely a legacy we inherit but a responsibility we must uphold.”
