Cebu Calling Podcast Kuya Magik
Behind every dazzling performance, elaborate costume, and unforgettable stage presence is a drag artist who needs a space to be seen.
As Cebu’s drag community continues to grow, more performers are entering the scene with hopes of showcasing their artistry. However, despite the increasing number of talented queens, dedicated performance spaces for drag remain limited, creating challenges for artists looking for opportunities to share their craft.
For many drag performers, the stage is more than just a place for entertainment. It serves as a space for self-expression, creativity, and community. But with only a handful of venues regularly hosting drag performances, opportunities for emerging queens to perform and gain experience can be difficult to find.
The rise of local competitions such as “Wosh Ka ‘Et’” has helped address part of this challenge by providing a platform where new and established queens can showcase their talent.
Created by Cebu drag artist Maria Lava, the competition has become one of the city’s notable drag events, now entering its third season and continuing to introduce audiences to the growing pool of Cebuano drag talent.
Through competitions like Wosh Ka ‘Et’, aspiring queens are given opportunities to develop their performance skills, build confidence, and connect with the local drag community. However, as more performers continue to emerge, the need for more inclusive spaces where artists can regularly perform becomes increasingly important.
Recognizing the importance of visibility, Tops Media Center (TMC) created segments that highlight Cebu’s drag community and provide a platform for local queens to share their stories, experiences, and artistry.
Through conversations and features with drag performers, TMC aims to help audiences better understand the people behind the performances and appreciate drag as a form of art and expression.
The goal is not only to showcase the glamour of drag but also to create awareness about the importance of having spaces where performers can thrive. By sharing the stories of local queens, these features contribute in a small way to increasing visibility and encouraging conversations about supporting Cebu’s growing drag scene.
For drag artists, visibility can open doors. It allows audiences to discover new performers, encourages venues to recognize the demand for drag entertainment, and creates opportunities for more community-driven events.
Cebu’s drag scene continues to expand because of the dedication of performers, organizers, venues, and supporters who believe in the importance of providing a platform for local talent. From competitions to weekly drag shows, every stage becomes an opportunity for queens to tell their stories and share their creativity.
As more artists enter the scene, the future of Cebu drag depends not only on the talent of its performers but also on the availability of spaces where that talent can flourish. With continued support, collaboration, and visibility, more queens may soon find the stages they need to showcase their art.
For now, every performance, every competition, and every story shared brings Cebu’s drag community one step closer to creating a more inclusive and vibrant safe space for everyone.
