From the Stage to the Spotlight: Cebu’s Drag Scene Continues to Flourish

Once limited to occasional performances in bars and special events, Cebu City’s drag community has steadily grown into a thriving space for artistry, entertainment, and self-expression.

Through local competitions, weekly shows, and a growing audience, drag has become an increasingly visible part of the city’s nightlife and creative culture.

One of the driving forces behind this growth is “Wosh Ka ’Et,” a local drag competition created by Cebu drag artist Maria Lava, a former contestant on Drag Den Philippines hosted by Manila Luzon.

What started as a platform to showcase Cebuano drag talent has continued to evolve, now entering its third season and attracting aspiring drag performers from across the local community.

Originally staged at Cave Bar, the competition has since found a new home at Censored, a local entertainment venue in Kasambagan, Cebu City.

The move reflects not only the competition’s continued success but also the increasing demand for spaces where drag artists can perform, compete, and connect with audiences.

Beyond hosting the competition, Censored has also become a regular venue for drag entertainment by holding weekly drag shows every Saturday.

Each week features a different lineup of drag performers, giving audiences the opportunity to experience a variety of drag styles, personalities, and performances while providing local artists with a consistent platform to showcase their craft.

For many performers, drag is more than elaborate costumes, makeup, and lip-sync performances. It is a form of storytelling, creativity, and self-expression that allows artists to celebrate their identities while connecting with audiences through music, comedy, fashion, and performance.

The continued success of local drag events also reflects the growing support from Cebuano audiences. More people are attending drag shows not only for entertainment but also to appreciate the artistry, talent, and dedication behind every performance.
