The Mystery Beneath Liloan: Cebu’s Legend of the Giant Fish

Nestled in northern Cebu, Liloan is known for its rich history, scenic coastal views, and iconic lighthouse, earning it the title “Light of the North.”

But beyond its charming exterior lies a mysterious legend that has captivated locals for generations, a story about a gigantic fish believed to dwell beneath the town’s historic church.

The name Liloan itself comes from the Visayan word lilo, which means whirlpool. This is fitting, as the municipality is known for its swirling waters and strong currents.

While science explains these whirlpools as natural phenomena caused by underwater currents and geological formations, local folklore offers a far more intriguing explanation.

According to legend, a massive fish lurks beneath the waters near the historic San Fernando El Rey Parish Church. This centuries-old church, built during the Spanish colonial period, has long been at the center of stories involving hidden tunnels and underground chambers connected to the sea.

Many locals believe there are secret passageways beneath the church that lead directly to nearby waters.

Some even claim that when stepping heavily on certain parts of the church grounds, the floor sounds hollow, suggesting the presence of tunnels underneath. These stories have only deepened the mystery surrounding the area.

At the heart of the legend is the creature locals call the “Cogtong.” Described as a giant fish, possibly resembling a goliath grouper, the Cogtong is said to be enormous enough to swallow a person whole.

Some stories claim that whenever the waters near the bridge begin to swirl violently, it is a sign that the creature is moving beneath the surface.

The tale of the Cogtong has endured through generations, passed down through stories shared by families and communities.

Over time, the legend has expanded beyond Liloan, with similar stories appearing in other parts of Cebu and even elsewhere in the Philippines.

Whether viewed as folklore, superstition, or a reflection of cultural identity, the story of Liloan’s giant fish continues to fascinate. It reveals how myths shape communities, connecting people to both their history and imagination.

Though no evidence has ever confirmed the existence of the creature, the mystery remains alive in the minds of many.

In Liloan, the waters still swirl, the church still stands, and the legend of the giant fish continues to linger beneath the surface, waiting to be told to the next generation.
