All 18 passengers aboard a motorized banca were safely rescued after the vessel capsized in waters off Gilutungan Island in Cordova, Cebu, on Sunday, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

The motor banca Jhon David was traveling from Getafe, Bohol to Cebu City when it reportedly became unstable and overturned near Gilutungan Island. Authorities did not immediately disclose the cause of the incident.

Personnel from the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Cordova immediately initiated search and rescue operations after receiving reports of the capsizing.

Fourteen passengers were rescued by the crew of MV Ocean Jet 10, which was passing near the area at the time of the incident. The rescued passengers were transported safely to Pier 1 in Cebu City.

The remaining two individuals — the banca operator and his son — were later rescued by Coast Guard personnel using a hired motorized banca. All passengers were accounted for, and no serious injuries were reported.

Following the rescue operation, towing activities were conducted to secure the capsized banca. The vessel was successfully towed and anchored near Cordova Reef.

The Philippine Coast Guard commended the coordinated response of its personnel, the ferry crew of MV Ocean Jet 10, and local fishermen who assisted during the incident.

Authorities also reiterated their call for the public to strictly observe maritime safety protocols, particularly during peak travel periods and when sea conditions may be unpredictable.

The PCG continues to monitor maritime activities in the area to ensure the safety of passengers and vessels navigating Cebu’s surrounding waters.
