Senator Imee Marcos faced online criticism after photos of her visit to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu on Saturday, January 10, circulated on social media, with netizens pointing out an apparent violation of the church’s dress code.

Marcos made a surprise visit to the Basilica amid the Sinulog festivities. Photos posted on her official Facebook page showed the senator wearing a red, sleeveless blouse, which several netizens noted does not comply with the Basilica’s guidelines on proper attire inside the church premises.

The images quickly gained traction online, drawing reactions from users who questioned why Marcos was allowed to enter the Basilica despite the perceived dress code violation.

Some commenters also raised concerns about the consistent and equal enforcement of church rules, particularly during major religious celebrations attended by public officials and dignitaries.

Following the online backlash, the Basilica released a statement reminding the faithful to observe proper attire at all times when visiting the church.

Church officials reiterated that the Basilica is a house of prayer open to everyone, while emphasizing that reverence and devotion should be reflected in one’s conduct, including compliance with established dress code guidelines.

The Augustinian community also called on the public to remain respectful and disciplined, regardless of the actions of others, and encouraged devotees to focus on the spiritual significance of their visit, especially during the Novenario in honor of the Señor Santo Niño.
