Nearly 250 people were injured in road crashes across Central Visayas during the recent holiday period, according to data released by the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7).
As of 6 a.m. on December 31, DOH-7 recorded a total of 248 road crash injury cases across the region. Of the total number, 33 cases were newly recorded during the latest reporting period.
Based on the agency’s breakdown, drivers accounted for the largest share of injured patients, with 152 cases, representing more than half of the total recorded injuries. The figure includes 76 injuries resulting from collision incidents and another 76 from non-collision cases, such as self-accidents or road mishaps where no other vehicle was involved.
Rear passengers accounted for the second-highest number of injuries, with 70 cases recorded, while pedestrians sustained 19 injuries during the same period.
DOH-7 said road crashes continue to rank among the leading causes of emergency consultations during the holiday season, as increased travel and celebrations contribute to higher risks on major roads and highways.
Aside from monitoring road crash-related injuries, the agency said it is also tracking cases related to chronic lifestyle-related diseases and fireworks-related injuries as part of its annual holiday health surveillance.
The health department reiterated its call for the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as holiday celebrations continue into the New Year.
“This holiday season, let us prioritize safety and health. Stay alert while on the road, take care of existing health conditions, and avoid using fireworks, especially illegal ones,” the agency said.
DOH-7 earlier reminded motorists to practice responsible driving and avoid risky behavior, particularly during periods of heavy traffic and extended celebrations, to help reduce preventable injuries and ease the burden on emergency health services during the holidays.
For emergencies in Cebu City, authorities reminded the public that assistance may be requested through the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) Emergency Hotline at 911 (Smart, TNT, SUN), 0932 537 7770, or 0917 839 9896.
