Organizers of the 2026 Cebu Marathon issued an apology on Monday, January 12, after many runners in the 42-kilometer and 21-kilometer categories finished the race without receiving their finisher medals.
The marathon, which drew around 12,000 participants, was marred by logistical problems that delayed the distribution of medals. Several runners reported waiting for hours at the finish line, while others left the venue empty-handed.
The delayed distribution reportedly began close to 7 a.m., prompting boos from some participants and spectators.
Under standard marathon protocol, finisher medals are given immediately after runners cross the finish line as recognition of their accomplishment.
However, organizers said the medals did not arrive at the race venue until 6:51 a.m., by which time many participants had already completed their races.
The organizing committee said uncertainty over the arrival of the medals on race morning prevented them from making announcements at the venue, which contributed to confusion and frustration among runners.
According to the organizers, the delay was caused by production and shipping issues involving Suarez Arts, the marathon’s long-time medal supplier since 2011.
The committee said the supplier failed to deliver the medals on schedule despite repeated assurances.
Organizers disclosed that they were initially informed that the medals would not arrive in time for race day.
A last-minute release from Customs at the Port of Manila allowed the medals to be flown to Cebu, but offloading issues and transport delays prevented them from reaching the venue before the first runners finished.
While citing the supplier’s failure, the organizing committee acknowledged responsibility for the incident and apologized to the runners.
“For many runners, that medal is not just an item; it is a symbol of completion and achievement. We failed to deliver that moment to you,” the organizers said in a statement.
The committee said it has demanded accountability from Suarez Arts and required the supplier to take part in distributing the remaining medals, particularly to runners who are not based in Cebu.
Organizers assured participants that all finishers will receive their medals. Runners who did not receive theirs were advised to contact the organizing committee to arrange delivery by emailing info@cebumarathon.com.ph or cebumarathon2026@gmail.com.
