Renowned Filipino engineer and technology innovator Diosdado “Dado” Banatao has died at the age of 79, his family confirmed.

Banatao passed away on Christmas Day due to complications from a neurological disorder while in Stanford, California, according to a statement released by his family on Friday.

“We are mourning his loss, but take comfort from the time spent with him during this Christmas season, and that his fight with this disease is over. We thank everyone for all the messages of support and prayers during this time,” read a post by Rey Banatao on social media.

Banatao was widely regarded as one of the most influential Filipino figures in global technology, having built a distinguished career in Silicon Valley where he was credited with pioneering innovations in computer chip design.

His work played a significant role in the development of affordable and efficient computing technologies during the early growth of the personal computer industry.

Born in the small town of Iguig in Cagayan Valley, Banatao rose from modest beginnings to become a leading figure in the international technology sector.

He earned a degree in electrical engineering from the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila before pursuing further studies in the United States.

He later obtained a master’s degree from Stanford University, a move that marked the beginning of his long association with Silicon Valley.

Throughout his career, Banatao worked with several major technology firms, including National Semiconductor, Intersil, and Commodore International.

During his time in the industry, he was credited with designing the first single-chip, 16-bit microprocessor-based calculator, a breakthrough that helped reduce the cost and size of electronic devices and made computing more accessible to a wider public.

His contributions extended beyond engineering as he took on leadership roles in the technology sector.

In 2010, Banatao became chief executive officer of Ikanos Communications, a company specializing in broadband semiconductor solutions. Under his leadership, the firm focused on developing advanced technologies aimed at improving global connectivity.

Banatao was also known for his efforts to support innovation and technology development in the Philippines.

Through various initiatives, he advocated for stronger links between Filipino talent and global technology networks, encouraging education, entrepreneurship, and research in science and engineering.

In recognition of his contributions, Banatao received numerous accolades over the course of his career. In 2018, he was named the Ramon V. Del Rosario Sr. Awardee for Nation Building, an honor given to individuals whose work has significantly contributed to the country’s progress.

The award cited his role in strengthening the Philippines’ innovation ecosystem and inspiring future generations of Filipino engineers and entrepreneurs.

News of Banatao’s passing prompted tributes from members of the technology and business communities, many of whom credited him with opening doors for Filipinos in the global tech industry.

He was often described as a trailblazer whose achievements demonstrated the potential of Filipino talent on the world stage.

Banatao is survived by his family, who asked for prayers and support as they mourn his passing. His legacy, marked by innovation, leadership, and advocacy for technological advancement, continues to resonate both in Silicon Valley and in the Philippines.
